Had a great (belated) birthday Sunday. Drive into Had a great (belated) birthday Sunday. Drive into Chicago was easy, parked directly in front of the restaurant, got to play Addams Family pinball, had an incredible meal filled with drama and wine, got out of dinner in time to see the sun set and home in time to pass out by 10. Perfect adult evening. 😆
My mom and I had an “it’s complicated” relat My mom and I had an “it’s complicated” relationship, at least in later years. In the early years, though, she was my hero. I saw her as pretty, smart, and independent with two attributes I would never have: blue eyes and a cute nose. 😆

1. Mom cut my dad out of this family pic after they divorced! Weird because they got on well but were very on-and-off over the years. They never pitted me against the other. I’m grateful for that.

2. Sassy early teen-dom when my mom did more work putting up with me than I did her: I was endlessly rolling my eyes and deeply disrespectful! The opposite of this moment. Heh.

3. At my high school graduation party that she put together for me. I wore dirty black sweatpants I found on my bedroom floor in lowkey protest of a big party and regretted it all day! 😂 I also broke my tooth on a piece of carrot cake that day. Karma? My dad would die a month later and all hell would break loose.

But I will always miss this early version of us. ❤️

A few of my favorite things from the car portion of the day:
1. The actual only original Grease car!
2. Star Wars stuff
3. Brian’s car from Fast 7 (I loved all the F&F cars)
4. Ecto-1!
5. KITT from Knight Rider
6. Mold-A-Rama! Disney-themed originally from the 1964 World’s fair!
7. My favorite: the actual car Britney Spears drove around during her breakdown year. 😆 LIVING HISTORY!
8. Obligatory Mystery Machine

Lots of little shoutouts and jokes
to myself in here including places I’ve lived, books I’ve loved, and even books I worked on. The little pink one on the shelf, It’s All About the Shoes, is a book I edited, my friend @locascioanne designed and my husband @thewoodworkerandthedrunk took all the photos for back when I worked at Sourcebooks.

When I was a kid, my grandma Mary Ann bought a bra When I was a kid, my grandma Mary Ann bought a brand new blue Camaro and outfitted it with a novelty horn that played the William Tell Overture. She also smoked these ridiculous skinny black cigarettes and was basically a wacky, adventurous, movie-obsessed weirdo who drank too much and cursed like a sailor.

I’ve been thinking of her nonstop this weekend when I realized I wanted a fun “midlife crisis” car because of her influence.

So! I found my dream midlife crisis car actually in stock this weekend (voodoo!?) and went for it—just a couple of weeks after what would have been Grandma’s 91st (I did the math in my head so I might be wrong) bday and just in time for this year’s Oscars (we never missed one!). Miss you, my wild Grandma! I like to think you’d get a kick out of Pepper the Mini Cooper Clubman. 🥰

Oh, and this is my first (probably only?) brand new car! 😆 it’s my 50th bday present to myself.
Made a bunch of fussy layered paper bookmarks! 😍 I love them!
